Methyl methacrylate, abbreviated as MMA, is an unsaturated ester. It is a colorless transparent liquid at room temperature, volatile, explosive and flammable, and its vapor has a pungent odor. It is soluble in alcohols, ethers, ketones and chlorinated hydrocarbons, slightly soluble in aliphatic ethers and alcohols, and sparingly soluble in water. It can form azeotropes with water and methanol.

Application Scope
Methyl methacrylate (MMA) is mainly used in polymerization and copolymerization. Special polymerization processes are required for each application, using free radical initiators (organic peroxides, azo compounds) or ionic initiators.
- It can be used to produce polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA, organic glass) via bulk polymerization, which is applied in artificial decorative materials, construction parts, optical information materials, electronic component encapsulation, etc.
- It can be used to produce coatings, varnishes, adhesives, waterproof agents, lubricating oil viscosity modifiers, etc. via emulsion polymerization.
- It can replace styrene as a crosslinking agent, dilute unsaturated polyester resins, and act as a modifier for natural and synthetic rubbers.
Most methyl methacrylate is used in the organic glass industry, but it also has extremely wide applications in many other fields. At present, it is widely used as a functional monomer in medical functional polymers (polymer products and polymer drugs), textiles (second monomer for acrylic fibers), coatings, varnishes, PVC processing additives, adhesives and other fields.
